Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a tiny amount of clear coat to level out the scratches sitting in it. It is the difference between paint that is clean and paint that actually reflects. It is also the one service where the honest answer is sometimes that you do not need all of it.

The fine web of circular scratches you see in direct sun. This is what correction is genuinely great at.
Swirls are shallow, they sit in the top of the clear coat, and a single polishing stage usually takes most of them out.
It is also the defect that makes the biggest visual difference, because swirls are what scatter light and make a dark car look gray.
Older single stage paint and neglected clear coat goes dull and chalky, and no amount of washing brings it back.
That dead layer has to be cut off. Underneath it the paint is usually still good, which is why a faded hood can come back looking almost wrong next to the rest of the car.
On a truck that has lived outside its whole life this is the most dramatic thing we do.
Here is the honest limit. Run a nail across it. If it catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat.
We cannot polish that out, because polishing removes clear coat and there is only so much of it before you are into the color underneath.
We can soften how obvious it is, and we will tell you that is what we are doing rather than promising it will disappear.
Acidic marks eat down into the clear coat and leave a crater rather than a deposit sitting on top.
Shallow etching polishes out. Deep etching has taken material with it and behaves like a scratch, so the same fingernail test applies.
The lesson from this one is speed. Bird mess left on hot paint for a week is a different job to bird mess wiped off the same day.
Clear coat is finite. Every correction spends a little of it, and it does not grow back.
That is why we do not just run the most aggressive pad over the whole car. We match the cut to the defect, panel by panel, and use the least that will do the job.
It also means a car that has already been corrected hard by somebody else has less left, and we will say so if that is what we find.
Correction is the longest thing we do and it is not a same afternoon job on most vehicles. A single stage on a car in decent shape is a full day. Heavier work on a larger vehicle can run into a second. We would rather book it properly than start something we have to leave half finished.
If the car is a daily that lives outside and gets washed at a tunnel, a full correction will look incredible and then start collecting swirls again straight away. In that case a lighter polish and a good sealant is better value, and we will say so. Correction makes the most sense on a vehicle you are going to look after, one you are selling, or one you actually care about.

No, and anyone who says yes is guessing. Anything you can catch a fingernail in has gone through the clear coat and cannot be polished out safely. We can make it much less obvious and we will tell you which ones those are before we start.
Correction removes a small amount of clear coat by design, which is why we test on one section first and use the least aggressive approach that works. On paint that has already been corrected hard before, we will tell you if there is not much left to work with.
The correction itself is permanent, the scratches are gone. What matters after that is how the car gets washed. A tunnel wash will put swirls straight back in.
Yes, otherwise freshly corrected paint is completely bare. We finish with protection as part of the job.
