Careful degrease and dress-down so the bay looks as clean as the rest of the truck.

An engine bay detail is a careful degrease and dress down of everything under the hood. Done right it is safe, it makes leaks and problems visible instead of hidden under grime, and it is the thing that separates a vehicle that has been detailed from one that has been washed.
Tap any of these to read the detail.
The fear is reasonable. Fuse boxes, coil packs, alternators and open intakes do not enjoy being hosed.
Which is exactly why the covering step comes before anything else and why nothing high pressure goes near a harness.
A bay gets cleaned with brushes, chemistry and dwell time, not with force. Force is what causes the horror stories.
A bay caked in oily film makes a small leak invisible, because everything is already dark and damp looking.
Once it is clean, a weep from a valve cover or a power steering line shows up as a fresh wet line against clean metal within a week.
That is genuinely useful. Several of the bays we have cleaned have found their owner a problem they did not know about.
If you are selling a vehicle, the hood is going up. It always does.
A clean bay reads as a vehicle that was looked after, fairly or not, and it does that before the buyer has driven anything.
It is one of the cheapest things you can do to a vehicle you are about to list.
A bay full of glossy dressing looks great for a day and then bakes.
Heavy silicone dressings go sticky under heat, collect dust and end up looking worse than the grime did.
We dress plastics and hoses back to a satin factory look instead. It photographs less dramatically and it lasts.
Most of the effect actually comes from the areas around the engine rather than the engine itself.
The underside of the hood, the shut lines, the slam panel and the cowl are what you see when the hood is up, and they are what usually get skipped.
Doing those and leaving the engine alone would still look like a clean bay. Doing both is the job.
Usually an hour or two depending on how long it has been. It works best booked alongside a wash, since the bay is going to drip onto clean paint otherwise and the sensible order is bay first, paint second.
If the engine has an active leak, a known electrical fault or a modified harness with exposed connections, tell us first. We may still do it, but we will do it differently, and on some vehicles the right answer is to leave it alone. We are not going to pretend that never happens.

It is when it is done with covering, dwell time and low pressure instead of a pressure washer. That is the whole method. We do not blast a harness.
We work around them. Old, already lifting decals are the one thing we cannot promise, and we will point those out before we start.
Tell us where. We can usually still clean it, and afterwards the leak will be much easier to trace, which is often the more useful outcome.
Once a year keeps on top of it. Once ever, before you sell the vehicle, is the other common one.
Yes. The bay drips, so it should be done before the paint, and doing both in one visit saves you a callout.
Usually yes, especially if the bay has never been cleaned. We will tell you when we see it.
